When you are self-publishing a book, you generally want to create the largest, most inclusive audience you can. But when it comes to marketing children’s books, that kind of marketing plan could potentially hurt your sales. Children’s books can range from a target audience of parents with kids who cannot read on their own, all the way up to middle grade, independent readers. You will want to be cautious of what age range your book tailors and how you should best target that audience.
Know Who You Are Targeting
If you have not yet published, determine what age range your book will best resonate with. Is it heavy in text or graphics? Who is the vocabulary best suited for? What kind of issues are presented in the story?
All of this will vary depending on your target audience. Do your research and find out what the audience’s expectations are. Once your book is published, you will want to make sure you are creating marketing strategies that resonate with the intended buyer as well.
Can you market your book for a beginning reader or is it something they will have to have an adult help them read? If you are aiming for older kids, your book should be more text-heavy and fewer pictures. For younger children, your book will be laden with pictures and lighter text.
Make Your Website Unique
You are going to want to take the time to get creative with your website. Create something that is engaging and appropriate for your targeted audience. Having printable coloring pages from your book, screen savers, games, quizzes, or creating a fictional world online are all fun ways to get interactive with your audience.
Take to social media for reader contests. Instagram is a great platform to have parents tag you in a picture of their child reading your book for a possible prize pack. This helps to create word-of-mouth marketing, which is one of the best ways to get your name out there.
Some other fun ways to utilize social media could include age-appropriate jokes, life hacks for parents, or even projects that incorporate your book. Whatever you decide to do, try to be consistent. Maybe do a joke or hack every Thursday. Get it to be something your audience looks forward to and wants to share.
More Than Words
Illustrations are one of the most important components of a children’s book. This is another area that you are really going to want to do your research if you are self-publishing a book. It is important to make sure the artist is in the trade for the long haul, this will be beneficial in the event you ever want to expand on your book.
Characters are another factor to consider. You want to make sure your characters are licensed to you and there are no copyright issues that would arise if you decided to grow your brand. Know that not all artists are the same, so do not hesitate to ask these important questions.
Children are going to gravitate to books that are visually appealing. Parents are going to be more apt to do the same.
